When you see the word ‘Luton’ in a van name it denotes a particular style of commercial vehicle body, which always has an enclosed box body extended over the cab.
It actually has a pretty fascinating history. The style takes its name from the town, Luton, which is where the vans were made. The style was designed in the town to transport large volumes of one of Luton’s main exports – straw hats! Being very light, these were wrapped in hessian in long cylinders to fit across the width of the van. It therefore made sense that the van was a long as possible, something enabled by elongated the body above the cab. The part of the van above the cab is normally referred to as the peak, the Luton or the kick.
